Teresa Collins - Athletic Director

This page documents concerns regarding the role and actions of the Athletic Director as they related to our daughter’s participation in school athletics and the events leading to her mid-year removal. The purpose is not to speculate about intent, but to evaluate observable conduct, oversight, and responsiveness in matters affecting student welfare.

Scope of Review

This review is based on:

  • Meetings and communications involving the Athletic Director
  • Oversight responsibilities related to coaches and athletic programs
  • Concerns raised by parents regarding safety, treatment, and fairness
  • The absence of disciplinary findings against the student

Summary of Key Concerns

  • Lack of responsive oversight when concerns were raised
  • Failure to intervene or clarify shifting expectations
  • Participation in actions that disrupted academic access without explanation
  • Absence of student-centered advocacy during escalation
  • Silence as decisions progressed toward irreversible outcomes

1. Role and Authority

As Athletic Director, Mrs. Collins held responsibility for coach oversight, athlete safety, program standards, and appropriate response to concerns raised by families. This role positions the Athletic Director as a critical safeguard when conflicts arise between coaches, students, and administration.

2. Observable Conduct

Prior to the season, expectations for our daughter as a dual-sport athlete were discussed with Mrs. Collins and coaching staff. It was understood that volleyball was her primary sport and that cheer participation would be limited to sideline involvement. That understanding remained in place throughout the fall semester and was never revised in writing.

Despite this, expectations later shifted abruptly without reference to policy or advance notice. No clarification, documentation, or corrective communication was provided by the Athletic Department.

Throughout the season, multiple concerns were raised regarding coaching conduct, athlete treatment, and safety. These concerns were communicated in good faith and with the expectation of oversight. To our knowledge, no follow-up, investigation, or remediation was communicated.

3. Impact on the Student

The absence of athletic oversight contributed to confusion, distress, and instability for our daughter. Inaccurate or uncorrected narratives regarding her commitment and participation were allowed to persist, negatively affecting her experience and reputation.

Mrs. Collins was present during at least one instance in which our daughter was removed from class or study hall for cheer-related matters despite the absence of disciplinary or academic concerns. These removals disrupted instructional time and contributed to emotional distress without subsequent explanation or acknowledgment.

4. Safeguarding and Process Considerations

Concerns involving athlete safety, adult conduct, and power imbalance were raised to the Athletic Director without documented inquiry or response. No evidence of a safeguarding review, coach accountability process, or student-centered assessment was shared.

5. Use of Authority and Escalation

As the situation escalated, the Athletic Department did not propose:

  • Restorative or probationary options
  • Temporary accommodations
  • De-escalation measures
  • Advocacy for the student’s continued access to education

Authority remained largely passive as decisions progressed toward removal.

6. Alignment With Christian Athletic Leadership Expectations

Athletic Directors in Christian schools are often expected to model:

  • Protection of student welfare
  • Accountability for coaches
  • Transparent and fair processes
  • Willingness to address difficult concerns
  • Advocacy for minors in moments of conflict

Conclusion

Taken together, the actions and omissions documented here raise concerns regarding the adequacy of athletic oversight, responsiveness to safeguarding concerns, and the absence of student-centered advocacy during a period of escalation.

While reasonable people may disagree about outcomes, the lack of intervention or engagement by the Athletic Director as decisions moved toward irreversible consequences for a minor warrants careful reflection and review.
